FAQs
What is Jiu Jitsu?
Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-focused martial art and combat sport that revolves around using your body to control your opponent's, employing techniques like strangulation and joint locks to achieve submission.
What makes Midnight Jiu-Jitsu Club different from other jiu-jitsu schools?
Midnight Jiu-Jitsu Club is not an academy. We encourage members to guide their own training through use of the flexible schedule of open mats, instruction, and workshops. Unlike a traditional jiu-jitsu school, the mat space is explicitly designed to help meet individual goals whether they be self-defense, competition, fitness, or to just have fun. The club prioritizes clean technique, building community, and the safety of our training partners.
What is the uniform policy?
No torn or unwashed training gear. Nogi can be practiced in a form-fitting t-shirt or rashguard, and shorts. Gi is practiced in a grappling-specific kimono; no karate or other striking martial arts gis will work due to the difference in fabric durability.
There is no strict uniform policy. Wear your 10th Planet singlet to gi class and your official Gracie Barra gi to nogi class; although instruction will not be changed to suit your uniform, discussion allows for exploration of uniform-specific variations and questions.
How often should I train?
Consistency helps determine progress. If your goal is to compete or improve as fast as possible, we recommend you train at least four times a week. If you want to see progress but do not have a flexible schedule, two times a week can still be effective if you're really engaged during your training. What you put in is what you'll get out.
How does the belt system work?
The ascending order of rank is white, blue, purple, brown, black. Rankings for those under 16 are white, grey, yellow, orange, and green (each with three sub-rankings). Belts are awarded through skill improvement and acquisition, not time or request.
Is Jiu Jitsu safe?
As a contact sport, injuries are possible in jiu-jitsu; however, it is the club's priority to maintain a safe training environment for everyone by requiring the practice of clean and controlled technique that matches one's physical ability.
Am I too small, big, or old for Jiu Jitsu?
No. Jiu Jitsu accommodates all sizes, ages, and fitness levels. Each student is encouraged to train at their pace while learning to work with different body types.
Can you help me compete?
Yes, we support students who want to compete, but we usually require at least six months of consistent training before entering competitions to build a strong foundation.
What about hygiene?
Proper personal hygiene is essential in jiu-jitsu. Grappling takes place in close quarters, and for safety reasons it is mandatory that every member must be bathed, in clean gear, hair tied back, with toenails and fingernails trimmed before stepping onto the mat.
Will I get a good workout?
Absolutely! Jiu Jitsu offers a full-body workout that improves strength, flexibility, and mental acuity. It’s great for fitness and stress relief.
Why do people love Jiu Jitsu?
Jiu-jitsu cultivates physical, mental, and emotional control. You can learn to defend yourself while having fun, gaining confidence, becoming self-disciplined, and building a community. It is transformative and often considered a lifestyle by its practitioners.
